How JibsyChess started
I've played chess since 2018, starting as chess captain at my school. In 2023 I began playing for the Chris Hani Chess Association (CHCA), a developing chess region in South Africa, and was later elected its Deputy President. I'm also its Ratings Officer and a tournament arbiter.
That work showed me how much of district chess runs on volunteers' goodwill. Results end up in spreadsheets and group chats, and teachers who want to run a tournament are stuck with pairing software that's hard to learn. Most of them simply can't use it.
So, while studying IT at CPUT, I started building what we were missing. I built CHCA's website, with live ratings, public player profiles and a points-based system for selecting teams. Then I started on a pairing program simple enough for everyone to use.
What drives all of it is fairness. Every player should be able to see their results, understand their rating and trust how teams are picked.
Other districts, clubs and schools have the same problems, so in 2026 I started JibsyChess to bring these tools to them. Everything we build comes from someone who runs tournaments, rates them and knows what goes wrong on the day.
